PASSING BY
A lifeguard’s seat has been erected at Montgomery to enable us to admire the busting city from above.
Peter Weidenbaum based his work on the hustle and bustle that characterises Montgomery. He designed an extremely high
lifeguard’s chair in stainless steel. In the concrete surface to which
the chair is attached there is a poem by Agnieszka Kuciak. In this way
Weidenbaum invites the passer-by to imagine a bird’s-eye view of the
city, to reflect on surroundings that are always in motion and to allow
themselves a moment of tranquility.
" It’s like a Braille map, a fountain from the back,
a shadow trailing from a cast rosette,
a dream of Art Nouveau behind a lofty wall,
where heirs still fight amongst themselves
over what’s beautiful. And stone surrounds
white heather, boxwood, plumes of grass "
on display
Montgomery, on the boundary between Sint-Pieters-Woluwe and Etterbeek, is a crucial crossroads in the city. The square is a major traffic intersection and the roundabout with its fountain is a striking entranceway into the city. Around Montgomery lies an internationally-oriented district with many embassies, schools, doctors' practices and fine mansions. It also has a conspicuous number of larger mansions from around the previous turn of the century. Not far from here is the Stocklet palace, a gem of art deco.
This work adornes the corner of Montgomery Square and St-Michielslaan / Avenue Saint-Michel since June 2008.
